Relates to

This mantra relates to the causal body aspect of each of us, which is beyond the gross (physical) and the subtle body (mind). As the name suggests it is the cause of the gross and subtle body. What is the causal body? It is ignorance of our true nature (Atman).

We experience the causal body in the deep-sleep state of consciousness.  The experience in deep-sleep is of ignorance.  During this state the self is aware only of the thought “I don’t know.”  The individual identifying with the causal body is called ‘Praajna’, meaning the one who is nearly ignorant.  The sum total of all causal bodies, or all jives (ego), is called ‘Ishwara’.  Eshwara is the creator, the Almighty, all pervading while jiva is the created and a limited being.  Jiva is nothing but the conciousness (Atma) conditioned by ignorance. Eshwara is the consciousness (Brahman) conditioned by Maya (total ignorance).

An important difference between the two is that while jiva is under the influence of maya, Eshwara controls maya.  Jiva is bound by ego (ignorance) and his knowledge is limited, while Eshwara is without ego and is omniscient.  Both jiva and Eshwara are the same conciousness.  Due to the difference in the conditioning, jiva considers himself as different from Ishwara. The cause for this difference is ignorance of the Self.  The only way to redeem oneself from the effect of separateness from Brahman (Atma, conciousness) is to remove the ignorance. Ignorance can only be removed by subjective knowledge (Jnana).  Knowledge alone liberates.

The Atman is in and beyond the three bodies and the three states of waking, dream and deep sleep.  It is indicated by the word ‘Turiya’ which can be considered as the 4th state.  ‘Turiya’ indicates oneness of the self and Brahman.  One who can ‘see’ this oneness is liberated while living.  He becomes one with the whole creation.

Benefits of chanting

This mantra is very potent and must not be treated casually.  When chanted with a pure mind the self will be able to ‘see’ That which lies beyond the three bodies (gross, subtle & casual) and the  3 states of conciousness (waking, dream and deep sleep).
